I am a Sunday Painter. Self taught. My mother, Sarah, introduced me to the application of oil paint. She was a colorist for a portrait photography studio in Pittsburgh, PA, in the early 1960’s. My father, Robert, a portrait photographer.
At eight years of age, I apprenticed with Sarah at the kitchen table. I would apply the background color on family portraits with wads of cotton dampened with turpentine. I suspect that’s why I love the smell of turpentine. She would finish the subjects. Families, children, pets. Through this experience, I learned to approach painting as work, not a curious pastime. As much a discipline, as it is a creative process.
My lifetime profession is equally creative -- marketing for venture funded startup companies. I live and work in Mountain View, California, just down the street from Google, Yahoo, Facebook, and LinkedIn. But throughout my exciting professional career I remained committed to painting as an interest and a talent to be developed.
I’ve painted still lifes, portraits, wildlife, and landscapes. Most recently, California landscapes from real life -- plein air. Influences include several contemporary masters -- Scott Christensen, Mian Situ, Charles Muench, Thomas Buechner. My favorite book -- ‘How I Paint’, by Thomas Buechner, a masterpiece of writing. A great read for painters and non-painters alike.
